Guernsey Awards for Achievement
This year's Guernsey Awards for Achievement saw the recognition of Guernsey’s finest from the world of business to sport and charity.
The Guiton Ambassador of the Year Award was presented to Specsavers co-founder Dame Mary Perkins in recognition of her achievement in business but also for her huge efforts towards charities and the island community.
And it was further success for Specsavers when its Training Academy was presented with the IOD-GTA University Centre Excellence in Training Award for the NP Group Silver Salver. The runners-up were Collas Day and FRM Investment Management.
For the Specsavers Award for Lifetime Achievement, islanders nominated unsung heroes who have worked tirelessly for the community and the service of others. The winners were Bob and Jan Carre for their dedication to the Guernsey Island Amateur Athletics Club. The award was presented by fellow award-winner, Dame Mary Perkins of Specsavers Optical Group.
The business awards once again saw a wide variety of companies entered in the three categories of small, medium and large. The judging panel, chaired by Deputy Mike O’Hara from Commerce and Employment, comprised a representative from Chamber of Commerce, the Confederation of Guernsey Industry, the Institute of Directors, Young Business Group and the Guernsey International Business Association.
The first to be presented was the NatWest Best Small Business Award, for companies with 15 or less full time staff. This was won by Meadow Court Farm which fought off competition from investment company Dawnay Day Milroy and Jyra Ltd, which promotes fair trade products. The award was presented to Ray Watts by NatWest’s Jason Le Ray, senior business development manager and Paul Milstead, area manager for business banking.
Mines Awareness International Ltd was awarded the BWCI Best Medium Business Award for companies with 16-60 full time staff. Professional support company Active Group and Wayfarers World Travel were runners up. Stephen Ainsworth, senior partner of BWCI presented the award to Ben Remfrey.
The Healthspan Best Large Business Award, for companies with over 60 full time members of staff, was presented to Deutsche Bank. The runners up were RBC and Royal Bank of Scotland International. The award was presented to Brian Conway, Deutsche Bank head of Trust Administration by Derek Coates Healthspan Chief Executive.
Meadow Court Farm then went on to win the top award of the evening, the Commerce and Employment ‘Guernsey Business of the Year’. This award is chosen from the winners of each of the three business categories, small, medium and large. The judges decided that the family-run business had achieved consistently high standards in all seven of the competition criteria, which ranged from business growth to social responsibility. The award was presented by the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir Fabian Malbon to Ray, Joc and James Watts.
Around 800 people attended the ceremony at Beau Sejour to witness the ceremony, which, this year celebrated its 22nd year.
